National Forklift Safety Day Recognized by Shoppa's
Shoppa’s Material Handling recognizes the fourth annual National Forklift Safety Day, an event that educates customers, government officials and policymakers about the importance of proper operator training and the safe use of forklifts.
Sponsored by the Industrial Truck Association (ITA), this event will take place Tuesday, June 13, in Washington, D.C., along with other manufacturers and industrial companies. Forklift dealers, distributors and manufacturers around the country will also hold local events promoting forklift safety that day.
Research shows the material handling industry has a major impact on the economy. It is responsible for employing nearly a quarter million people and has a multiplier effect creating 2.5 jobs in other sectors for every one within the industry. The forklift industry contributes over $25 billion to U.S. GDP annually.
With such an impact on the economy, safety awareness is absolutely necessary to keep forklift operators safe in an efficient, organized environment. In fact, 70% of all industrial accidents are caused by operator error, according to the National Safety Council. A study by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) showed that effective training may reduce accident rates by 25-30%. Following forklift operator training, OSHA found a 61% improvement in operator performance scores.
National Forklift Safety Day will begin in Washington D.C. on June 12th, 3 to 5 p.m. There will be an educational session, ITA reports including NAFTA trade policies and OSHA updates. The next day there will be a morning session focusing on forklift and industry safety featuring speakers from both industry and government. Meeting will also be held with district congressional representatives.
Forklifts have made significant improvements in safety over the years. Toyota Industrial Equipment has improved its forklifts by greater stability and providing better protection and increasing visibility for the operator. In fact, Toyota forklifts are known for their patented System of Active Stability (SAS), which is able to detect unsafe operating conditions utilizing over 3000 readings and actively take over controls to improve stability of the forklift.
As the world’s number one lift truck, Toyota Industrial Equipment produces the toughest, most dependable equipment. Shoppa’s Material Handling is a proud dealer of Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufacturing and is honored to promote forklift safety awareness this National Forklift Safety Day.
This year Shoppa’s is offering several safety related specials including 10 percent off operator safety training classes, price reductions on safety related products and a free safety checklist - just for the asking.
